...noisiest weekend in Rabaul since 1943, when U.S. bombers flattened the South Pacific town. Seemingly bent on the same sort of destruction, rival tribesmen swarmed into the two-acre market square, wrecked the open-air benches piled with produce, belted one another, battered police cars, beat up the native constabulary and shoved a fire engine over a four-foot bank. It all began when, in the midst of a jostling market crowd, a Sepik tribesman pinched the stern of a shapely Tolai tribeswoman...

...disrupt local administration; the Communists even managed to sabotage the national census by substituting falsified lists in some areas. The Viet Cong, which is what the Communist Vietnamese are called, are everywhere: tossing grenades into isolated villages in the rice fields in the south, sowing unrest among the border tribesmen in the thickly wooded Annamese highlands to the north. When its horn blows, all those marked will be irresistibly drawn toward it and abducted, later to be injected with a solution that transforms them immediately into swine. "We must believe that the Europeans...

...other issue that might tilt Afghans into the Russian camp is their prickly relations with Pakistan. The rugged mountain terrain between the two nations is inhabited by wild Pushtu-speaking Pathan tribesmen-some 9,000,000 on the Pakistan side of the border alone. The Pathans love to shoot, make their own guns by hand, admit allegiance to neither Pakistan nor Afghanistan. (But once assimilated, the tall, tough Pathans make natural leaders: both the Afghan royal family and Pakistan President Ayub Khan are of Pathan stock.) The Afghans have piously encouraged the Pathans' demand for an autonomous state...
