...Thailand's wild west is a tense mix of Thai soldiers, Burmese rebels and smugglers of jade, gemstones, heroin and amphetamines. A boxer calling himself Thai may have been born in a Burmese refugee camp and speak the language of the Karen guerrillas or the Mon tribesmen over the frontier. Crowds flock from Burma for the fights, some crossing legally at the checkpoint but most just wade across the parched Moei river. In this town of mixed allegiances and sliding identities, boxing alone provides a little certainty?without exception, every match is Thailand vs. Burma...
...even has a bit of the rough-and-tumble of America's West?far more, in fact, than Vietnam's officials would like. In February, thousands of ethnic minorities rampaged through towns in Dak Lak and Gia Lai provinces, apparently enraged by the still-unexplained arrests of two Jarai tribesmen near the Cambodian border. They threw stones, broke windows and in one village reportedly tied up and beat a local official. Witnesses say some shouted for the Kinh to leave. In a country where open opposition is rare and dealt with harshly, the riots amounted to Vietnam's worst unrest...

No official would say why the two Jarai tribesmen were arrested (both have been released after signing self-criticisms). Gia Lai's Governor Ha, one of the few who acknowledges that transmigration has caused tensions, says the government has compensated the minorities by giving them free education and health care. "Just as in a family, the children may be jealous of each other," Ha says...
...mountainous jungles of Mindanao, primitive tribesmen stumble upon the wreckage of an American B-17 bomber from World War II. In the twisted fuselage they discover several strongboxes with U.S. government markings. The stacks of printed sheets inside are worthless to the hunter-gatherer tribesmen but not to the city slicker who happens to pass by a few days later?he acquires them in exchange for a few trinkets. At this point in the tale, the narrator reaches into a rusty, banged-up box and pulls out a sheaf of the papers, seemingly yellowed by age: Treasury bonds, worth trillions...
...this seems to take some of the magic out of it. And while I know part of the point of this is to be able to show lotsa hot chicks in bikinis, well, isn't that why we have "Temptation Island"? So, a modest proposal for "S3": Use real tribesmen, from, say Paupa New Guinea, and maroon them in downtown Newark for two months...
