...Frida S. Bucky, a Bach minuet for an encore. His able accompanist-pretty Mme. Gaby Casadesus, wife of Concert Pianist Robert Casadesus (unpronounceable, rhymes roughly with "has a canoe")-rippled discreetly at the piano. Dr. Einstein proved that he could play a slow melody with feeling, turn a trill with elegance, jigsaw on occasion. The audience applauded warmly. Fiddler Einstein smiled his broad and gentle smile, glanced at his watch in fourth-dimensional worriment, played his encore, peered at the watch again, retired. The refugee children stood to get about...
...Live, by the Benny Goodman Sextet (COLUMBIA). Benny picks a fine tune in the first place, and plays it in that light bounce that's becoming more and more identified with anything Goodman does. I liked the chorus best, with Count Basic playing melody against Benny's low register trill. Very original stuff. Reverse is a fast blues, Benny's Bugle. George Auld takes the honors on this. . . . He had a gun; he was looking for warblers. He heard one-a quick, burred trill. He spotted the warbler, stopped the song with a shot...

Since all works of Gilbert & Sullivan (except The Pirates of Penzance) are in the public domain in the U. S., he could easily have produced The Mikado in Hollywood without paying royalties to the D'Oyly Carte Company, which owns the English rights...
When Gay MacLaren was a little girl she decided to become an elocutionist after she heard a Chautauqua performer recite The Bobolink. The high point of this performance was a trill: cheeeeeee, prrrrrrr, cheeeeeeeeeeeeee, which Gay practiced so hard her South Dakota neighbors asked her if she didn't know a piece with some other kind of bird in it. But Gay kept on practicing, studied elocution in Minneapolis, finally got her big chance at the New York Chautauqua. Thereafter she followed the Chautauqua circuit, along with chalk-talk artists, bell ringers, evangelists, yodlers, zither performers, magicians, bagpipe players...
