After a voyage of more than five months and 248 million miles, the first of a trio of terrestrial ships made its rendezvous with Mars late last week. Precisely on schedule, the 1,300-lb. U.S. Mariner 9 fired its retrorocket and went into a looping orbit around the red planet, swinging as close as 800 miles to the Martian surface. With that successful maneuver, controlled entirely by its onboard computer, the $76.8 million windmill-shaped robot became the first man-made satellite of another planet. ...meaning and menacing in their silence, which perhaps befits an age of uncertainty. In Old Times, he returns to his favorite human geometry, the triangle (in this case, two women and a man), and examines the tricks that life plays on memory and memory plays on itself. The trio will be acted by Robert Shaw, Mary Ure and Rosemary Harris. But that artistic decision simply deepens Hirsh's aloofness, and the doubtfulness that he will ever achieve the sort of earthly happiness that Alex works for. By portraying a man so socially limited, Schlesinger and Gilliatt heighten their point's effectiveness...
