...producers, Salt 'N' Pepa do not yet have the stylistic daring of longtime helpmate Herby "Luvbug" Azor, often settling for a silky but mostly anonymous layering of vocals and synths. Salt, though, crafts a trio of bracing cuts to close the album. "Silly of You," a fairly tired "I-earn-the-dough" ego track, does boast an insinuating opium-den vibe; "The Clock Is Ticking" incorporates electric guitars and vocal distortions more freshly than any R&B since En Vogue's "Free Your Mind"; and "Hold On," the final track, makes the unlikely choice of Brandy's lightweight hit "Baby...
Anticipation ran high among Boston's jazz community as the all-star trio led by saxophonist Joshua Redman arrived for a series of performances at the Charles Hotel's Regattabar. So high, in fact, that an additional show was added Sunday afternoon, making for a total of eight performances over four days--all sold out. For such renowned players to perform in a cozy venue like the Regattabar meant that many were unable to witness some spectacular music making, but the fortunate got what they wanted...and more. But for a trio of guys in their 50s, The Monkees have more pizzazz and energy than a lot of bands around today...
...cinematically significant decades. Malick, however, is probably even better known for not only exiling himself from Hollywood, like Lucas and Kubrick, but also for having willfully removed himself from the public eye altogether and becoming, as it is commonly said, the J.D. Salinger of movies. Out of the aforementioned trio, you certainly wouldn't have guessed that Malick would be the one directing seemingly every other male movie star in Hollywood in a big-scale World War II combat epic. The picture is The Thin Red Line, based on the James Jones novel about the battle of Guadalcanal. The cast...
