...Sunday afternoon when I met the young trio of actors who fill out the second generation in the cast of American Beauty. Certainly, I could have picked the three, um, American beauties out of a lineup--all striking examples of uncommon poise. Petite and chatty, Mena Suvari (teenage lust object Angela Hayes in the film) appeared with a surprisingly modest brunette dye job which only partially belied the model-quality good looks that garnered her roles in both "American" movies this summer, both this one and American Pie. With unshaven, not-quite-ratty stubble that gave him the look...

...episode of Unsolved Mysteries. The fear of the movie's characters is raw and brutal, but the fear of the audience members is dulled by the absence of any emotional involvement in the film. Perhaps if writers/directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez had instructed their dazed and confused trio to put down the cameras for a moment and just talk, we would have had some emotional stake in the film. Sure, it's hurricane season, but why are there so many storms and why is this one so powerful? Is it just coincidence, or has humanity's abuse of the earth ? in the form of global warming ? come back to haunt...

...trio of studies published last week show that despite years of self-esteem lessons, mediation classes and circle time, bullying continues to be a pervasive and destructive force in the school lives of our adolescent children. Some 80% of middle schoolers reported engaging in bullying behavior--ranging from excessive taunting and rumor spreading to destruction of property and physical aggression--according to a study published this month in the Journal of Early Adolescence. A high percentage of kids who bully others also report being victims themselves. Bullying is worst in the middle school years, as kids make transitions...
