...best possible spin -- pro- or anti-Clinton -- on the tangled mass of testimony, tapes and transcripts. Here's what the GOP would like you to note: Dick Morris muttering darkly of a presidential "secret police" that keeps the lid on bimbo eruptions; Monica Lewinsky telling Linda Tripp "I wouldn't cross these people for fear of my life"; Betty Currie's growing forgetfulness on the witness stand. For the Democrats, Tripp's tapes show an impressionable Lewinsky being willfully manipulated -- if not entrapped -- by her older, wired friend, and Currie's testimony is even more exculpatory than Starr dared reveal...
...probably for worse--we are in a privileged position to gues about her perspective. So what's the average sensibility of a smart gal, an ambitious teen or twenty-something? I'm not arguing Monica hasn't been a victim, perhaps of the media, of Kenneth Starr, of Linda Tripp, but of Bill...
...Donnell. She's right. Her new talk show has none of the comfy good cheer of Rosie's; it's cruder, more sensational and also more serious. Mostly the debut was banal, if often profane, as Whoopi Goldberg pontificated about Monica Lewinsky and Roseanne interviewed a tiresome Linda Tripp impersonator. But Roseanne and Goldberg's conversation with three teenage mothers was surprisingly simple and affecting. Roseanne's emotions are not polished to an Oprah-like smoothness, and she can be appealingly authentic, in her rare quieter moments...
...investigator is nothing new, of course. As recently as Friday, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee tried -- and failed -- to pass a resolution asking Starr to give Congress an account of the crucial opening days of his investigation. But White House aides plan to use the release of the Tripp tapes, due Thursday, to focus attention on how Starr's whole case started out with a manipulative, selectively edited and possibly illegal wiretapping...
...Considering Tripp's low standing in the public esteem, such a probe may turn out to be a bold p.r. move on the prosecutor's part. Couple it with the ongoing investigation in Maryland over whether Tripp knew her wiretap was illegal, and it adds up to a whole lot of trouble for the informant extraordinaire. Not to mention what may become -- in female eyes, at least -- the most inexcusable charge: that she persuaded Lewinsky not to wash the stained Gap dress by telling the former intern she "looked fat" in it. "I hate Linda Tripp!" a tearful Lewinsky told...
