Even before the first whistle blew this season, sportswriters knew which four men belonged in anybody's All-America backfield. Obviously, two of them were Army's durable Davis & Blanchard; the other two were Georgia's Charlie Trippi and Notre Dame's Quarterback Johnny Lujack. Last week, with every sports editor puffing into print with his own All-America team, the same four men turned up on almost everybody's list. Only Grantland Rice-who picks Collier's All-America team, the nearest thing to an official selection-was different. Granny Rice couldn...

Untrippable Trippi. Last week Georgia crunched helpless Auburn 41 to 0, had only Chattanooga and Georgia Tech left. The man who does most to make Georgia go is Charlie Trippi, son of a Pennsylvania coal miner. He has gained over a thousand yards in Georgia's eight games this fall. Tied with the other Bulldog halfback, John Donaldson, as the team's leading scorer, Trippi blocks, kicks and tackles as well as he runs and passes. Married, and the father of a 19-month-old girl, Charlie Trippi is almost as good at baseball as football. He has had offers from the Braves, Yankees, Phillies, Athletics and Red Sox, and a $17,500 pro football bid. Charlie hopes next year to play both games professionally (he prefers baseball) and earn $50,000 a year...

...well they might be. When Charley Trippi, a great back from Georgia University, got his premature discharge from the Armed Forces, non-triple-threat G.I.'s threatened Congressional investigations. But when Trippi rejected a handful of attractive offers from the avowedly professional National Football League to return to college, it was accepted as the routine gravitation of talent to its most lucrative zone of operations. The Southeast Conference makes no bones about its over-the-counter football. Athletic scholarships are officially licensed, as is expense money, known affectionately within the trade as "B.T.R.", (board, room, tuition). B.T.R. may well...

...ever. ¶ Illinois' Buddy ("Black Magic") Young, pre-season favorite who hadn't measured up to his advance billing, finally came to life. Young got off a 34-yard touchdown run which helped Illinois beat Wisconsin 27-to-21. ¶ Georgia's big firecracker Halfback Charlie Trippi failed to go off against the Oklahoma Aggies (he was held to a mere 21 yards), but Georgia won anyway, 33-to-13. ¶ Fullback Bobby Layne, who is deep in the heart of Texas' fans, got stopped cold by Arkansas' big line, took...
