Oval Loops. In the past two decades, Bacon's work has gained immeasurably in its scope of color and plasticity of drawing. With the recent triptychs and other paintings, his ambition to reinstate the human figure as a primary subject of art has been to some degree fulfilled. No other living artist can paint flesh at this pitch of intensity, in this extremity of rage, loss and voluptuousness, or with this command over pigment. His typical setting is familiar: an anonymous oval room. It has tubular furniture, somewhere between a Corbusier couch and an operating table. Sometimes a bare...
...Vladimir Nabokov that I have to give you some of them right away. Asked by an interviewer to comment on the recurrent linking of his name with those of Beckett and Borges: That play-wright and that essayist are regarded nowadays with such religous fervor that in the triptych you mention, I would feel like a robber between two Christs. Quite a cheerful robber, though. On Hemingway:...I read him for the first time in the early forties, something about bells, balls, bulls, and loathed, it. Comparing youthful expectations with elderly realities: At fifteen I visualized myself as a world...
Cavemen's Trophies. In the second long scene (the play is a lengthy, un interrupted triptych), the frustrated boys get spiky-tempered, vicious and ugly. One of the boys delivers a monologue on what he once found in a girls' John, which for sheer nauseated revulsion at woman as a menstruating animal is in direct descent from the diatribes of the early Christian fathers. Bruised and crying, the girls are lugged offstage like cavemen's trophies...
Some of the reattributions were, in fact, long overdue. Everybody knew that Hubert van Eyck was a carver and maker of frames. So the two wings of a triptych attributed to him could not possibly be his, but presumably were the early work of his young brother...
...carved oak reliefs of its altarpiece, circa 1565, form one of the chief treasures of St. Leonard's Church. The triptych shows scenes in the life of St. Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary. The Bible has no mention of Anne. The only source is the apocryphal gospel known as the Protoevangelium Jacobi, written in 170-180 A.D. This account has it that Anne and Joachim were devoted, but Anne could not conceive. So Joachim went into the desert to meditate; his wife stayed home to worry. An angel appeared to Anne, Joachim had a vision in the desert...
