Speaking of Wagner, Columbia has signed Melchior up, and just released his first recorded attempt at "Otello." The album comprises the monologue and death scene, along with Rienzi's prayer, and the song from the second act of "Tristan" beginning "O Koenig." These records show that he is the only tenor in circulation who could do this tremendous role anything like full justice. His Italian isn't all it might be, and his style is a little heavy in spots, but the necessary power and brilliance are there. The best of this new album of his is, of course...

...Tetrazzini, Jacoby, Amato, Journet, Bada. In the hysterical years of World War I, secret service men shadowed non-Germans Leopold Stokowski, Ossip Gabrilowitsch, Leopold Godowsky. The conductor-worshiping '205 showed the most extreme faddism ("Toscanini conducting Italian nonsense could pack the hall"). In the late-lamented Flagstad epoch, Tristan & Isolde grossed $150,000 in nine performances, "thereby becoming the greatest 'hit' ever to strike Broadway...

Encyclopedia and $25 went to Questioner Maury Maverick, ex-Mayor of San Antonio. Sunny Los Angeles' Mayor Fletcher Bowron turned up in sunny Miami bundled up in an overcoat and a smug grin. Michigan's Governor Murray Van Wagoner signed up for rhumba lessons. His abstemious predecessor, Luren D. Dickinson, 82, announced that if he got "a call from...

...need is more imperative economically than artistically. Chief mainstay of the box office for the past six years have been Soprano Flagstad and gusty, barrel-built Danish Heldentenor Lauritz Melchior. Almost always the pair sold out the house with their hefty love-making in Tristan and Isolde, their caroling and ho-yo-to-ho-ing in the Ring operas. Ordinarily there would be on the Met's Wagnerian bench two sopranos who could take Flagstad's place as Melchior's teammate. But last week it appeared that neither of these would be fully available...
