...perennially drunken and pompous British film maker in exile to make bar mitzvah movies for doting parents. The film maker is played by Denholm Elliott, who is hilariously disheveled and polluted nearly past the point of pretension, a characterization of enormous comic skill. His bar mitzvah production is a triumphant, unconscious (on his part) parody combining the most tiresome features of the anthropological and popular front documentaries of another time. Beethoven's Fifth provides the musical score, Elliott himself the pompous narration, holding together shots of the ceremony itself, African puberty rituals and Nazis on the march-all pottily...
...hours earlier, the East Room had been the setting for Richard Nixon's farewell speech to his Cabinet and the White House staff. In the interim, pictures of Nixon and his family and scenes from his triumphant Peking and Moscow visits had disappeared from the corridor leading to the Oval Office. Soon afterward the 6-ft. 9½-in. Russell joined the Boston Celtics, and in 13 years of competition he was named most valuable player five times and starred on eleven championship teams. During two of those championship seasons (1968 and 1969), Russell was player-coach for the Celts, the first.black coach in the history of the National...
Juliet is the more acute problem of the two, but on rare occasions a teenage actress has conquered the role. The redoubtable Fanny Kemble began a long Shakespearean career with a triumphant debut as Juliet at 19. Adelaide Neilson made her debut in the part at 17 and became the most popular Juliet of the latter half of the 19th century. And in our own century Phyllis Neilson-Terry started playing the role at 18, to wide acclaim...
