There is not much news in Karl Rove's memoir, Courage and Consequence, which is something of a moral triumph for the author. Rove is nothing if not loyal, and these sorts of books tend to create a stir only when they betray the boss. A significant amount of dirt is dished here - an astonishing amount, actually; this is a work of titanic pettiness - but it's all tossed at enemies of George W. Bush. One example: Hillary Clinton is criticized for sitting down, rather than standing, for a photo with rescue workers three days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks...
...dream didn't last a month. At the climate change conference in Copenhagen in December, it was China and the U.S. who haggled over a final deal, while Europe sat on the sidelines. Instead of a foreign policy triumph, 2010 began with an unseemly squabble over whether or not to bail out Greece, whose debt has dragged down Europe's currency. At the same time, U.S. President Barack Obama announced he would be skipping an E.U.-U.S. confab in Spain in May, frustrated, it appeared, with the endless summitry that goes with accommodating the E.U. Little wonder that Europe finds...
...with former students, most of whom agree to participate. A rate that high is almost unheard-of in the diet world. Only 7% of dieters finish Jenny Craig's one-year program, while Weight Watchers counts people who stay even a few pounds under their starting weight as a triumph. But these programs lack the comprehensive approach of Wellspring. Research indicates that therapy-based obesity treatment can be three times as effective as traditional diet-and-exercise models. But how many people can run off to rehab for six months? "The outcome is probably better [at Wellspring] than...
...European Union was initially hailed throughout the world as “the European miracle,” a triumph for supranational organizations and international unity. Banded together in a monetary and trade-based union, the EU experienced rapidly rising living conditions and surprisingly harmonious relations. The last few months have shown, however, that the EU’s economic foundations were fundamentally flawed. Monetary and fiscal policy are deeply related, so a monetary union in which each subunit pursues its own fiscal policy is destined to fail. The best and most practical solution for the European Union...
When the euro was launched in 2002, it was celebrated as a triumph of monetary unity. The 16 nations in the so-called euro zone could certainly use another dose of that founding spirit today. As questions mount about the very future of the currency due to the ongoing Greek debt crisis, there seems to be more anger in parts of Europe over Greece's financial recklessness than a willingness to save Planet Euro from imploding by bailing Athens out. That's certainly the case in Germany and France - the two largest euro zone economies - whose peeved taxpayers will have...
