...Recycling Old Tricks Stockman appears to be a serial book cooker. Even after he admitted during the Reagan Administration to playing games with how much came in and how much went out, he can't stop himself from doing it again. In The Triumph of Politics, he describes two tricks the Reaganites (including himself) used to deceive the public about the fiscal condition of the U.S. government. One was the "magic asterisk," used to bury wishful-thinking revenue assumptions in the footnotes, where it was hoped that nobody would discover them. This is essentially similar to the "round trip" loans...
...easy, in other words, to lose sight of what a remarkable phenomenon dreaming is. Every night, devoid of external sensory stimulation, our brains screen internally-projected films concocted from pieces of our own thoughts. Nearly always in the lead role, we flee from danger, triumph and flop in our areas of endeavor and enjoy passionate encounters with people we yearn for or hardly know. We do these things and countless others not in a state of detachment but rather, despite the bizarre distortions typical of dreams, convinced the events are real and with our emotions and senses engaged. Ukrainian president Viktor Yushchenko may have overcome Russian political interference and dioxin poisoning to triumph during the 2004 orange revolution, but he's now at risk of losing his hold on power. On April 2, Yushchenko ordered the dissolution of Ukraine's single-chamber parliament, the Rada, to make way for early elections in late May. In response, the Rada, which is dominated by his opponents, declared the order unconstitutional, blocked funding for the new election, voted to replace the current election commission with the one that was fired for rigging the 2004 election, and referred the crisis...
...first blush, you can't blame them. The idea sounds not a little corny. On Tuesday, April 24, Idol contestants will sing what Fuller calls "emotive, moving, aspirational, triumph-over-adversity songs." In between renditions of, say, Bridge over Troubled Water and Man in the Mirror, there will be clips of Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest's trip to Africa, Randy Jackson's trip to Louisiana and Paula Abdul's trip to Kentucky. When viewers call to vote for their favorites, sponsors will kick in some money for every vote cast...
Following a season high 17 goal effort last week, the Harvard women’s water polo team nearly matched that output en route to a 16-4 triumph over Connecticut College (1-6) last night in New London, Conn. Utilizing a smothering press, the Crimson contained the Camel offense by never letting it get down the pool. Rather, the Harvard defense forced multiple Connecticut turnovers and then converted them into easy scores. After one quarter the Crimson had built up a 4-1 lead. The second quarter was even more impressive as Harvard went...
