...scheming empress of days long past. Alternatively she is depicted as a treacherous snake in woman's dress, a harridan spitting venom and a wily warrior wielding a spiked club. Perhaps most shocking to the puritanical Chinese are caricatures of Chiang Ch'ing as a trollop. In one of many variants on this theme, she is shown reclining on a divan decorated with dollar signs, her skirt hiked up, while two of her sycophants nibble on her fingers and toes...

...introduces his sullen, smoke-eyed cast. Deodatus Village is a half-dressed epitome of black buckdom. The strumpet he struts for is whore-cum-ballet-dancer Stephanie Virtue Secret-rose Diop--"Virtue" for short, which neatly sums up the situation. The curate Diouf pleads for passive religious acceptance; Felicity Trollop Pardon shrieks "Dahomey!" and "Africa!" with an epileptic frenzy; Augusta Snow says little and wears anger like a nimbus round her pout-mouthed head. Genet further burlesque's white perceptions of black names by dubbing the mysterious revolutionary "Newport News." Adelaide Bobo assists emcee-director Archibald and they begin...

Down by the pool, pale Fortune's batty advances are repelled with casual, callous disdain by the glistening sun worshipers. The author has mastered all the sledgehammer nuances of brutalizing speech: the deadening obscenities, the tag lines from talk shows, the dreary threats and boasts...

...African Company, while avoiding sterile and monochromatic abstraction, cannot entirely escape the verbal straitjacket in which Genct has encased his ideas. While reveling in the astonishing exoticism of Esther Folle's portrayal of Felicity Trollop Pardon or Mary Alice's impish Stephanie Virtue Secret-rose Diop, one can hardly forget that, without the stage presence of these strong personalities, the characters would be entirely forgettable-perhaps, even interchangeable. Gustave Johnson (as Deodatus Village) and Catherine Sella (as Adelaide Bobo) lack the requisite intensity and control to attain a similar mastery over their roles...
