...with missionary zeal. Frequently they feel they have discovered the Truth about sex. And frequently this Truth can be summarized in one of two ways: to such enlightened authors sex is either the symbol of all our society's problems or the answer to them. Thus Henry Miller's Tropic of Cancer uses-sex to symbolize action in a world where all action is hopeless though despair must be avoided. On the other hand, in Women in Love D.H. ...stunned-not by the decision of our Supreme Court but by the criticism by highly respected clergymen. If the clergymen are so critical of the modern words used in Tropic of Cancer, then let them be courageous enough to explain some of the words in the Old Testament. Like millions of Americans, I have full faith in the Supreme Court...

...such "nightstand books" from a paperback dealer in Junction City. Last month, however, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the seizure unconstitutional. Also voided were Ohio's ban against an allegedly obscene French movie, The Lovers, and Florida's ban against Henry Miller's scatalogical novel, The Tropic of Cancer. The conflict between the court and the states raised a puzzling question: To what extent are there any more enforceable U.S. laws against obscenity...
