...obvious by dozens of subaqueous movies, one has to wonder why James Cameron, whose Aliens and The Terminator were among the smartest and most frugally made recent entertainments, plunged into the $50 million-plus Abyss. Or, if he was sending his cast on a dive into a bottomless ocean trough, why he didn't at least arrange to have a monster paddle up to meet them...

...short answer: sleeping. Almost 5,000 reporters prowl the nation's capital, and during the Reagan era, many Washington insiders knew what any inquisitive reporter should have known: HUD, with its million-dollar contracts, was a feeding trough. "Everybody who talked about HUD knew there was money to be made," says Republican political consultant David Keene. In addition, says the Government, they vastly oversold lifetime "partnerships" that promised lodging at the Grand Hotel and other accommodations at Bakker's Heritage USA theme park in Fort Mill, S.C. In one variation of the scam, some 9,700 hapless "partners" were offered the right to stay regularly in what turned out to be a single bunkhouse with 48 beds. As for the Taggart brothers, they are said to have helped themselves to $1.1 million...

Born as a low-pressure trough off the coast of Africa, fed by a combination of heat, moisture and atmospheric instability, Gilbert grew in size and force as it moved westward across the Atlantic. On Saturday, Sept. 10, about 225 miles southeast of the Dominican Republic, it was officially designated a hurricane when its winds exceeded the required 74 m.p.h. It sideswiped Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Sunday before reaching a raging fury over Jamaica on Monday. In Kingston the sky darkened and turned slate blue, as winds tore into the unprotected tropical island. Streets became rivers...
