...barely-populated audio-maps of restrained infectiousness. It is an enchanting but ultimately deserted place they take you, inhabited only by a gaseous voice. This is music you always heard in your head--but never so well made. Foraying onto the micro-dancefloor, Saint Etienne enlist the expertise of Trouser Enthusiast to mix beats for your pulse in "We're in the City." Sean O'Hagan's electronic wizardry also guest-stars in "52 Pilot," lending a signature High Llamasian boost to Cracknell's tingle-worthy vocals. ...loud, and it deals with AIDS and drugs. It is also a radical updating of Puccini's La Boheme, and the costumes, designed by Angela Wendt, take their cue partly from that. Roger (Rodolfo in the opera) wears plaid pants made from a material similar to a popular trouser cloth of the mid-19th century. Tom Collins (Colline in the opera) follows Puccini in that the young man has a coat he loves, although it is a Tommy Hilfiger-style jacket. Today's Mimi looks nothing like Puccini's seamstress. She wears tight, shimmering spandex pants with a new holographic...

Cole has the intensity and the passion for the job. A graduate of Cornell and the Columbia School of Journalism, she became a Chicago-based correspondent this year after stints as a reporter in TIME's People, Nation and Society sections. Approaching her assignments as a terrier does a trouser cuff, she hustled an exclusive interview with University of Michigan cyberpornographer Jake Baker days before his arrest by the FBI. She also uncovered a potentially dangerous internal revolt by a breakaway militant faction of the Ku Klux Klan...
