Striking General Motors workers in Flint, Michigan scored a small victory today, as their walkout at an AC Delco plant forced the temporary closing of a nearby truck plant that was running short of components. GM furloughed 3,100 workers at the truck factory. The Delco plant produces spark plugs, filters, cruise controls and other parts for the industry's Big Three. "Today's automobile factory is living off day-to-day, shift-to-shift inventories," says TIME Detroit bureau chief William McWhirter. "One walkout can shut down everyone else." ...soldier and a Haitian civilian were killed in an exchange of gunfire at a checkpoint in the Haitian village of Gonaives this morning. Another soldier was also injured when a pickup truck rammed into the checkpoint and the passenger came out shooting. U.S. troops killed the attacker. Although the incident appears isolated, TIME Defense correspondent Mark Thompson says, it has ended a "long string of good luck" in the U.S. peacekeeping operation. After a busy day at the clinic, Dr. Damon Stutes, 43, changes out of his surgical scrubs and climbs into his four-wheel-drive truck, custom built for high-speed chases. Pointing a remote control toward a video screen on the garage wall, he flips through eight channels, each offering a different camera view of the outside grounds. As the garage's metal door slides open, he tucks a bulletproof vest between his body and the truck window and steps on the gas. "Once I start moving...
...Carrey, sublimely confident that he knows what he's doing as he attempts to return a briefcase full of funny money to a woman (Lauren Holly) with whom he is smitten. This involves a cross-country journey with Harry (Jeff Daniels), Lloyd's equally dense roommate, in a truck that looks like a gigantic sheep dog. In order to enjoy the pair's company, adult viewers must regress to those thrilling days of yesteryear when bodily dysfunction represented the height of hilarity. But Carrey (ably abetted here by the woofly Daniels) is both symbol and satirist of our apparently irresistible...
...Despite achievements that exceed all but the most optimistic expectations, Haiti is still bankrupt and riven by social disarray and class distrust. Even the President, who continues to sleep on a fold-up cot in his office, seems stunned by the problems. "This country is like a battered old truck that's stuck," Aristide confided to a friend. "Pushing it will not start it. It needs technical work on the engine...
