...vodka--go ahead and submit to Disney World. Skip the main park and head for Animal Kingdom ($75). Cynics will argue, correctly, that the park's Kilimanjaro Safaris are merely rides around a large zoo. But this zoo has no walls, and you see it from a rover-style truck. The animals might walk right up or lie low in some brush as a guide imparts PBS-worthy information ("Thomson's gazelles are fully grown at 60 lb."). For adults who can't afford a trip to Africa, it's a highly satisfying substitute...

...These were our own neighbors. We knew them!" says Khaduri, still amazed. "We don't know what to do. If I go back, I don't have a house. I don't have cows. Nothing." As we talk, another open truck piled high with the belongings of refugees, carpets, clothes and a TV trundled by on the road to Tbilisi. He had the title role in Jonathan Kaplan's Truck Turner, starring with Yaphet Kotto, Scatman Crothers and, as a randy-mouthed madam, Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols. (It was really a black Rockford Files, the James Garner TV series that started the same year and on which Hayes had a few guest shots.) And of course waiters from snooty high-end places sometimes put on airs. They start to feel that because they work in close proximity to money or power that they've got it themselves. They develop foie-gras taste on a liverwurst budget. They won't spend money on education or new shoes, but they'll spend $400 on going out to eat. And waiters and kitchen staff tend...

...China An Extremist Strike Terrorists struck on the eve of the Beijing Olympics when two men in Kashgar, a city in western China's Xinjiang province, killed 16 policemen and wounded 16 more by ramming them with a truck and detonating homemade bombs. Officials said the attackers were Uighurs, an Islamic ethnic minority that has long bristled at China's repressive rule. The attack--perpetrated by extremists whom authorities linked to a group known to pose a threat, in a region long considered a possible target--undermined Chinese assurances that stringent security measures would safeguard the Games...
