...week Sadat spoke to Carter on the telephone, explaining why the timetable was so important to Egypt and the rest of the Arab world. He rejected the Israeli complaint that he was raising the ante in negotiations by placing more emphasis on the issue than before, although it was true that he had strengthened his case during the Blair House talks...
Anwar Sadat proposed this month that Gaza be used as the starting point for negotiating local autonomy for the Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza. He reasoned that Gaza I was of less importance to the IsraeIis than the West Bank; this is true for religious and emotional reasons and once the peace treaty with Egypt is signed, it will also be true for military reasons. Besides, only about 500 Jewish settlers live in Gaza, vs. 5,000 in the West Bank. Sadat also suggested that during the interim period, the Egyptians set up a liaison office in Gaza...
...Once upon a time there was a piece of wood." So begins The Adventures of Pinocchio (Macmillan; $17.50 hardcover, $9.95 paperback), by C. Collodi, translated by Carol della Chiesa. But as this intriguing volume shows, the story has no true ending. The marionette whose nose grows with each lie is almost a century old, and Attilio Mussino's paintings were first printed in 1911. Yet this version -somewhat redesigned for modern consumption-is as ageless as all great fables. The paper clothes, the bread hat, the saintly carpenter Geppetto, the Cat and the Fox, the Azure Fairy are creations...

Though not scheduled for the New York festival, it is a haunting re-creation of a true incident in 19th century Australian history, in which some schoolgirls disappear from an outback outing, never to be seen again, and with no satisfactory explanation for their disappearance ever discovered. Weir creates an oppressive atmosphere, a compound of heat, isolation and sexual innuendo that is quite singular. His skill at wringing terror out of emptiness and silence, his sense of the fragility and smallness of Europeans cast...
...cults focus attention on spiritual matters, self-realization, mystical attainment, and divert attention from the ever-delayed but inevitable revolution, or at least from reform and restructure of the economy and political life. The established religions also turn away, secure in the knowledge that they have the true message and all others must be frauds and charlatans. This leaves little more than a small lunatic fringe in defense of the cults; Mark Lane, famous for conjuring conspiracies and playing games with committees attempting real investigations into recent U.S. political assassinations, was busy defending Jim Jones of the People's Temple...
