Died. Robert Leo (Bobby) Hackett, 61, American jazz virtuoso; of a heart attack; in West Chatham, Mass. Young Bobby left school in Providence, R.I., at 14 to play guitar gigs in local restaurants, and later moved on to the cornet, the trumpet and fame with Glenn Miller and other titans of the prewar Big Band era. More recently, Hackett had been paying his bills by performing anonymously in treacly mood-music albums released under Jackie Gleason's name, but his reputation seems secure -almost as hot, cool and craftsmanlike on the horn in pieces like String of Pearls...
Judith Blegen and Frederica von Stade (Charles Wadsworth, piano and harpsichord; Gervase de Peyer, clarinet: Gerard Schwarz, trumpet; Columbia: $6.98). Two brilliant young American-born singers team up with a superior set of instrumentalists in a glowing recital of vocal music. The mood shifts in a varied repertory that encompasses Schumann's playful duet Das Glück as well as Chausson's haunting Chanson Perpetuelle, sung with grave beauty by Von Stade. Blegen's supple trills whirl with Gerard Schwarz's bright trumpet through Alessandro Scarlatti's aria Se geloso e il mio core...
Strains of Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky filter through the windows of the three-story brick building on 152nd Street. A nine-year-old pastes sequins on a ballerina's tutu. Dancers study acting, music, dance notation. D.T.H. builds its own scenery, and company members help the technical crew put up the show. They even know how to make costumes. If a dancer's costume pulls or sags in the crotch, he can tell the seamstress that...
Quite a few are: there are five other Velásquezes and five major El Grecos, including that overwhelming trumpet voluntary, the Prado's huge Annunciation of 1600. There are works by Francisco Ribalta and his great junior Jose de Ribera, a group of paintings by Zurbarán-including an exquisite still-life of cream and ocher pots drawn up like liturgical vessels on a table...
Died. Willis ("Ray") Nance, 62, a versatile musician who growled on the trumpet and wailed jazz on the violin for 23 years with Duke Ellington's band; after a long illness; in Manhattan...
