...distinctively jazzy, almost sultry feel to Sheets’s composition. Written as “a classically inspired piece with a sense of harmony rooted in jazz,” Sheets delegated the roles of the jazz band’s walking bass, tenor saxophone, and trumpet to the cello, viola, and violin, respectively. Tying the piece together was pianist Jennifer Chen ’11, whose performance evoked the mysterious sophistication of a nightclub. Sheets enraptured his musicians and audience alike, with the orchestra coming alive as they played his work...
...libertarian advocacy group funded primarily by the wealthy Koch family of Wichita, Kans., and its foundations. With its sister organization FreedomWorks - run by former House majority leader Richard Armey - the AFP nurtured the Tea Party movement in its early days, offering training and logistical support. When Santelli sounded his trumpet, Jenney organized the first Tea Party protests in his state. But the larger the movement has become, the less sway professional organizers have, Jenney told TIME. Subversive bass lines, syncopated drum beats and a tambourine lay down a solid foundation upon which wild trumpet riffs and trippy synths soon take over, creating an alternately jazzy, new-age feel. Stuart Staples’ oft-commanding vocals seem to politely refrain from overpowering the melodies, neatly weaving themselves into intricate tapestry of disparate sounds. An engaging prelude to the rest of the album, the title track exemplifies what makes the best...
...left aren't tempting fate by predicting victory. The left is, however, using the opportunity to bash Sarkozy's government. "What a fiasco: Operation National Identity, which was supposed to raise deep questions ends up in a retreat with its tail hanging to the tune of a cracked trumpet," Laurent Joffrin, editor of the leftist Libération newspaper, mused in his Tuesday editorial. "[Public opinion] immediately realized this was not a questioning of the nation that could have been pertinent, but a mediocre diversion in the time of social crisis...
