...Friedman's 1962 novel Stern, about a Jew who moves to the suburbs and endures a plague of abuse from neighbors and nature. The men at the center of Philip Roth's novels may rage and flail, but Larry doesn't dish out insults, he takes them. When the truth is found to be lies, and all the joy within you dies, just suck it up and hope you don't explode. That's Larry's method of coping. In Stuhlberg's precise embodiment, Larry accepts all tribulations with a mouth pressed into pruny silence, as if he had bitten...

...true” story then placing it deferentially aside. One does not get the sense that the sparseness of the secondary characters is simply a matter of avoiding lawsuits or friendly respect for privacy. It seems that, for Hoffmann, if the truth may also belong to someone else, he cannot presume to offer the definitive version and so will deliberately stray. Farmer uses newly released transcripts and recordings to cast doubt on the official version of events and show that the U.S. government was struggling to figure out which planes were hijacked and where they were going, even hours after...

One of the harmful byproducts of not telling the truth about what happened is that it did fuel all sorts of conspiracy theories about what might have happened. If what the government is telling you isn't true, then the truth could be anything. But my experience suggests that government lacks competence to carry off an elaborate conspiracy like what is being talked about with 9/11. I think there is evidence that the truth wasn't told...
