...rumor mills last week ground out the report that Joseph Stalin was on his way from Moscow to Stalingrad, one of the southern cities which Timoshenko was trying to save. If the story was true, it completed a parallel of Red Army history: Timoshenko fought at Stalingrad (then Tsaritsyn) after the Revolution, when the White Armies of Denikin and Kolchak were trying to crush the new Russia, and (according to orthodox Communist history) Stalin himself superseded the Red generals, saved the city and Russia with a series of campaigns over the land where the Nazis advanced last week...

Young Timoshenko fought the White Russians and foreign intervention troops on many fronts, was wounded five times, in 1919 helped defend Tsaritsyn (now Stalingrad) where he met Comrade Stalin, who was in command. In 1920 Timoshenko took part in the Red offensive on Warsaw which was repulsed by the Poles under famed Marshal Josef Pilsudski...

Timoshenko fought on the Eastern Front until the Revolution of 1917, then joined the Red Army and (by a process since abolished) was elected an officer. After the Whites whipped his Red unit in the Caucasus, Comrade Timoshenko escaped to Tsaritsyn, then defended by Red Army forces under Stalin and Voroshilov, with whom he became fast friends. They gave him command of a cavalry brigade and in 1920, while attacking Baron Wrangel's forces at Perekop in the Crimea, Timoshenko was severely wounded and his brigade was cut to pieces by the Whites...
