...twice as long as before. As Japan copes with a rapidly aging population, a major influx of foreign labor may well be the only way the nation can stay economically competitive. Yet many Japanese believe the immigration barriers aren't stringent enough, especially in the wake of the arrests. Tsuneo Taya is a tofu-shop owner in Nishi-Kawaguchi who often saw one of the recently detained men on the street, usually well-dressed and talking on his cell phone. He says the arrests have made him think twice about the delicate balance between immigration and security...
...knew it was time to hang up the loincloth. "I have no regrets," he told the press. Maybe, but sumo's notoriously conservative overlords might, as Takanohana was the only active Japanese yokozuna. The most Japanese of sports may crown as its next champion a Mongolian named Asashoryu. Tsuneo Watanabe, the head of the Yokozuna Deliberation Council, said: "I pray Takanohana's retirement isn't symbolic of Japan's decline." Masami Sato, 36, who left his electronics company in Yokohama after 16 years and is now training to be a health-care aide, says he will be earning half of his previous salary in his new job. "None...
NORMAL, Illinois: Mitsubishi Motors removed two top officials from its U.S. auto division Tuesday because they have failed to implement anti-sexual harassment policies almost a year after two class-action suits were filed against the company. Mitsubishi sacked Tsuneo Ohinouye, U.S. manufacturing division chair, and Tohei Takeuchi, president of U.S. auto sales, for not ensuring that recommended changes took place at the company's Normal, Illinois plant. The factory is the target of two still-pending suits charging that hundreds of female assembly line workers were groped, fondled and subjected to other harassment. But TIME's Bill McWhirter notes...
