...East-bloc kitsch and Trabant jokes are one thing; the reality of the D.D.R. was quite another. For this reason, even those with a highly developed sense of Ostalgie will probably, in the end, spend November in a forward-looking frame of mind. Visit, too, the Gedenkstätte in Dresden, www.bautzner-strasse-dresden.de, the still forbidding former city headquarters of the Stasi, the D.D.R.'s pervasive ministry of state security. Or take a look at Leipzig's Museum Runde Ecke, www. runde-ecke-leipzig.de, another Stasi base that is now an authentically preserved museum filled with examples of how East German society...
Time to dust off the art-history books. For fall, designers have taken inspiration from early 20th century Vienna. Led by the famous Wiener Werkstätte, the Vienna design scene flourished with bold, graphic patterns often in black and white. Today the look is reborn in Andrew Gn's collection of clutches for Leiber and Dior's dazzling diamond-encrusted watch. ...beauty legend Estée Lauder, opened the Neue Galerie on New York City's Upper East Side, he knew he was sharing his love of Viennese art and design with the world, but he probably didn't think he would be setting a fashion trend. The Wiener Werkstätte and the Secessionist movement that came out of Vienna in the early 20th century are influencing fashion and home design. Fabric manufacturer Maharam has reissued the fabrics of Dagobert Peche, and young designers like Proenza Schouler are picking up on the colors and graphic detail of the period...
...asked me then, I would have blasted the entire process for being pretty cynical. Sure, the staffer will ask you where you are from, but the tte--tte is more of a formality that occurs because it would be too rude to only go around asking for business cards. So the whole networking part acts as a faade of interest and interaction, with dialogue that is cursory and forgettable...
