Johnson could not have been of much help. All but discarding a well-written text, he launched into a country-style, tub-thumping harangue that sent away a good part of his audience before he had finished. Standing in a concrete canyon in one of the grimiest cities in America, he declared how happy he was to get away from Washington "out in this fresh, green country." He unreeled a stupefying equation purporting to show that the 9% increase in living costs since the start of the Kennedy Administration is minuscule compared to the rise in income: "You take...

Given the presence of a Cockney Casanova, Alfie's plot predictably unreels more like a score card than a scenario. Among the standard items is the eager middle-aged nymph (Shelley Winters) who entertains Alfie in a big bath tub. One of the more pathetic entries is the hen-shaped wife of a sick friend-they take char together, and then Alfie makes a grab at the old girl, just to "round off the tea nicely." And then there is the nubile nurse (Shirley Anne Field)-while Alfie is recuperating from overexertion in a TB sanatorium, she comes round...

...coast to San Diego. Aboard the 65-ft. yacht was Comedian Jerry Lewis, making his first real cruise on his spanking new toy. There was crystal in the galley, mahogany paneling everywhere, and a pair of deck chairs were tastefully stenciled "Mr. Captain" and "Mrs. Captain." Suddenly the tub sprang a leak, and pretty soon Pussycat was drifting helplessly. At last, when the table floated across the dining room, Mr. Captain and crew abandoned ship and made it to the beach, where they watched $350,000 worth of status break up in the surf...

...more successful bigots than Gerald L.K. Smith, but few have been so durable. During four decades as a rabble-rouser, he has made a career and a fortune out of preaching that only the far right is right - and that just about everything else is wrong. A onetime tub thumper for Huey Long, Smith says that the U.S. was meant to be "a white, Christian country," claimed in 1952 that Eisenhower was Jewish, and has called Hubert Humphrey "a creature of Jewish subsidy." Though his appeal today is only to a lunatic fringe, he still makes a handsome living from...
