...purge touched off an unseemly political tug-of-war between the Kremlin and Moscow's city hall. Sergei Gerasimov, the prosecutor appointed to take Ponomaryov's place, quickly resigned. In Parliament Yeltsin's opponents pushed through a lopsided vote of no confidence in Interior Minister Victor Yerin, who is in effect the national chief of police. Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, once a strong Yeltsin ally, fumed that only "criminals and bandits" would be in favor of firing senior police officials. Then he threatened to resign...
...Americans barely remember the Alamo, Mexicans see past and present as an eternal tug-of-war with their northern neighbor. Virtually any Mexican high school graduate readily recites a litany of humiliations most Americans ignore: the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo forcing the sale of Mexico's northern half; a 1911 U.S.-supported coup; American invasions in 1914 and 1916; the expulsion of as many as 1 million Mexican immigrants from the U.S. during the 1950s' Operation Wetback. Now California's Proposition 187, aimed at denying education and health services to undocumented immigrants, is seen as an exercise in ethnic...
More than anything, the FAS appears to be attempting to tug at graduates' heartstrings...

No one writes more convincingly of the tug between old and new, home and the allure of the unknown. Since these stories cannot make things worse for Rushdie than they already are, he has, on the page, the luxury of total freedom...
...Taylor recorded an album with tenor saxophonist John Coltrane. It is difficult to find a more bizarre record anywhere. With Coltrane struggling mightily to cling to his own advanced harmonic world against Taylor's barrage of atonal clusters, jarring rhythmic patterns, and jackhammer assaults on the piano, a profound tug-of-war between two musical camps ensues. Nobody wins, and the tension produced is exhausting both for the musicians and listeners. Still, this has to be one of the most interesting recordings of American music ever made. It has the curiosity value that one might experience hearing Frank Zappa conduct...
