...possible for men like Mitterrand not only to live but also to function at a high level years after their disease is diagnosed. From the moment his cancer was detected in 1981, Mitterrand's doctors kept close tabs on his condition by monitoring the level of certain proteins, called tumor markers, that are produced by cancer cells. Within a month of his first treatments--with radiation and hormones--those levels had plummeted. Radiation killed much of the cancer, and the hormones slowed the growth of whatever tumor was left...
...Gupta, reviewing his notes on the case, says Dr. McMillan agreed Christy was a candidate for a transplant but said she would first have to undergo several cycles of chemotherapy to demonstrate that her tumor would respond to the potent drugs used in bone-marrow therapy. "I believe he was told to send us away...

"I always admired Harry S. Truman," Synar told the Associated Press in 1994. "He fought special interests, and he told it like it was." So did Synar, generally. He railed against the widely popular Gramm-Rudman law designed to prevent deficit spending during the 1980s. President Clinton...
Winsick's doctors at the Long Beach, California, VA hospital discovered a benign tumor growing in his brain five years ago but decided he could not survive surgery to remove it because of a heart condition, which had required a quadruple by-pass operation. Fortunately, there was a life-saving alternative: he could undergo "gamma knife" radiation. The VA hospital didn't offer that particular treatment, but the nearby private Hospital of the Good Samaritan did. Winsick's VA doctors set out to arrange VA funding for Winsick's treatment there...
