...however, that I was less impressed by Dean Gitter (Macheath) because he never gave me any reason to worry about him. He was obviously in command whenever he was on stage, and with a weaker actor in the part, the play would have limped. I didn't tune in on Arthur Friedman (Peachum) until the last act, and if I saw the play again, I'd probably like him better...

...first the chants from the Lampoon steps were entirely unrelated to Vietnam: an LBJ echo cheer, "Happy Easter" sung to the tune of "Happy Birthday" and a stirring rendition of "My Country 'tis of Thee." As a finale we planned to stage a protest Easter egg roll in front of the buses. Unfortunately the buses had not arrived when the purely frivolous chants began to wear thin. An effort to play a tape of last week's "Shindig" to fill the gap failed because we did not have a loud enough speaker...

Delightful Puff. Playing variations on a theme comes naturally to a jazz musician. Rivers has carried much of this facility over into his painting. As jazz will use parts of a familiar tune to take off for bluer skies, Rivers is content to borrow bits of the old masters or leave parts of his painting unfinished and out of focus. Sometimes he will simply jot down on the canvas notations to color an area ocher or blue and then not bother coloring it. By this, he is leaving hints at the process of art as a form of living improvisation...
