Instead of attempting a journalistic study of bus-travel, regularly punctuated by comic touches, Director Frank Capra and Robert Riskin who adapted Samuel Hopkins Adams' story, fused the two. When Gable and Colbert hail a Ford for a lift the driver sings them a tuneless paean on the pleasures of hitchhiking. When they stop for gas, he tries to drive off with their battered suitcase. The quick flow of comic incident through It Happened One Night reaches its fantastic conclusion in a wedding at which the groom arrives in an autogyro while the bride runs away...
...cynical pianist suffer slightly in not being rendered by Harry Rosenthal, who created the role. The song publisher's mistress is played a little too broadly by June MacCloy. And this in spite a tuneless score, a glaring lack of "feminine pulchritude", and a few heavy, mediocre scenes. The producer and cast, 'tis true, had a pretty flimsy foundation to build upon. Much of the humour was stale and slapstick, and in not a few cases meager ideas succeeded only through the brilliance in their execution. Yet at other times...
Clothed in the cast-off garments of Apollo, with a crown of bay generally askew, strumming at intervals a tuneless lyre, the genius of the paper has lived on unchallenged and unchallenging while its mascot Pegasus has remained fast tethered in his stall...
