...York seems to pour out of office buildings at once, and the gloomy and echoing caverns of Pennsylvania Station fill with people, two Long Island commuter trains gulped up their nightly rations of humanity. Their doors clanged shut. The Hempstead-bound 6:09 rattled out into the East River tunnel with 1,000 men and women jammed in the seats and aisles of its twelve cars. The Babylon-bound 6:13 pulled out behind it with 1,200 rush-hour passengers...
Across the road from his office was Kim's private air-raid bunker, 70 to 100 feet underground and connected by a tunnel with the residence of his Russian advisers. In the bunker Kim had complete living quarters, a music room with an organ and a one-chair barber shop...
...bearded and emaciated G.I.s, who had been hiding in Pyongyang, told Brigadier General Frank A. Allen, deputy commander of the 1st Cavalry Division, that other G.I. prisoners had been loaded on a northbound train. Allen got into his jeep and set out in pursuit. But when he started firing I fell over and played dead. I prayed too. In the confusion I ran across a field. In the field I picked up four radishes. I jumped into another...
Supersonic wind tunnels are rather simple (though very expensive) to build. When their air moves well above the speed of sound, it passes through the experimental chamber in a smooth, even stream. "Transonic" tunnels (close to the speed of sound) are much more difficult. At this critical speed, very important in the study of aerodynamics, the tunnel tends to "choke." Shock waves form inside it, making accurate experiments difficult...
