...enraged and resentful Pappy. He writes to Pound after years of insults. "I send you my affectionate regards and to hell with you if you won't accept them." And to Hemingway. "So you go & compose a long letter full of various ways of saying that I'm a turd and all filled with expert blocks for undelivered blows. What the Hell! I never meant none of them things you say I couldn't have meant." The letters to Hemingway and Pound show the variety of MacLeish's voices. With Pound, he uses a crisp, precise telegraphese. Hemingway brings...

Donovan's love of ingenuity was infectious. William Duff, a retired book publisher who was sent to Algiers to recruit agents for spying in France, recalls one example: "We had a chap in Cairo who designed a land mine that looked remarkably like a camel turd. He put it in the diplomatic pouch and sent it to London. I'm not sure they knew quite what to make of it." ...Eleanor's sons may not exactly be lovable, but they're far from dull. Daniel Sherman plays John, Henry's favorite, very broadly, with an almost farcical glee. As "the family nothing," nicknamed a "walking pustule" by his brother Richard, Sherman gets to deliver such prize lines as "You turd." and "You're a stinker and you stink." In contrast to Sherman's comic posturing, Eric Luftman acts Richard Lionheart, Eleanor's darling, with straight-faced sobriety. Whether stiffly demanding his rights or reviling the rest of the family, he is a model of sullen, subdued rage. In between...
