Correspondent Charles Eisendrath journeyed to the opium-rich Afyon province of Turkey to talk with poppy farmers (see cut). Eisendrath also interviewed "Mehmet," a former Turkish smuggler who had turned informer for the U.S. Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. "The sweat bubbled in the creases of his forehead whenever Mehmet told specific details about his job," Eisendrath recalls. Shortly afterward Mehmet disappeared mysteriously from the BNDD network-presumably a casualty. Says Eisendrath: "In a way the sickness-and attempted cure-of the U.S. drug problem had confused Mehmet, and quite possibly destroyed...
...ANKARA: Turkish Senator Kudret Bayhan told friends in Ankara last February that he was going to France to buy a dress for his daughter. Nothing unusual about that. The high-living Senator was well off, and he had made frequent trips to France in the past. This time Bayhan failed to reckon with the newly coordinated French and Turkish narcotics enforcers. Such unlikely hybrids may now be a little closer to reality. Last week an Atomic Energy Commission researcher announced that he had achieved a long-elusive goal: the successful fusion of two different species of plant cells into a hybrid that has characteristics of both its "parents" and is capable of reproduction...
...prophets wrote knowingly of stealthy bears, the light-footed roe and the wild ass that "snuffed up the wind." But centuries of overgrazing and overcultivation depleted the land. During the reign of the Ottoman Empire, virtually all of Israel's trees were felled to provide fuel for Turkish locomotives. As a result of the depredations, the desert gradually advanced. Many of the original animals disappeared from the good land...
