Brest thinks he needs three endless hours to turn Death into a glam and fully cuddlesome character. And as we watch his movie (a remake of 1934's blessedly brief Death Takes a Holiday, in which Fredric March played the title role) slowly disappear into the blond hole of Pitt's affectlessness, we have plenty of time to observe just how profoundly he has misconceived Death. As anyone whose house he has visited can tell you, he's a vicious, merciless anarchist. Maybe Max von Sydow is now all wrong for the part. And we can certainly be glad Robin...

Arafat came out of the negotiations at Wye Plantation three weeks ago a happy man. For the Palestinians, the main issue had been how much more of the West Bank Israel would turn over to self-rule. Though Palestinian officials, who currently practice limited autonomy in 30% of the West Bank, thought they deserved another 30%, Arafat, as part of a strategic decision to get closer to the U.S., agreed last spring to an American compromise: 13%. Though ideologically opposed to withdrawing from any part of the West Bank, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, of the right-wing Likud, finally...

While the Wye agreement asks P.A. security officials to respect human rights, neither the Israelis nor the Americans expect that they will, which will turn up the heat on Arafat even further. Says "Omar," an activist in the military wing of Hamas: "We cannot let Arafat's dogs beat us and eat us, and do nothing. What do you expect of us? That we turn the other cheek?" Adds a colleague, "Ali": "We have reached the conclusion that preaching about national unity is not going to achieve anything. We have to do it the way others did, in Sudan, Afghanistan...

But in the days since Newt announced his resignation, his presumptive heir, Bob Livingston of Louisiana, has been peppered with furtive requests from fellow Republicans who want to turn back the reform clock. The total gift ban, they argue, is humiliating because it presumes lawmakers can be bought for a pittance. And some current committee chairmen, faced with losing power in just two years, are suddenly seeing the value in accruing the wisdom and effectiveness that only a long tenure can provide...

...family home in the outer 'burbs), but lacks many key touches. Especially lacking is the cool, retro music soundtrack one would associate with such a picture--the orchestral back up tunes whine of missed-opportunity. What is strangest is that in spite of all of this, The Alarmist turns out to be a very entertaining movie. Though one is left feeling incredulous by the turn of events, there is something fascinating about the incongruity. No one aspect of the movie is particularly lifelike; but the unpremeditated weirdness of it all, especially in light of the omnipresent pretense of normalcy...
