...Pierre Salinger The veteran journalist announced in France last month that he had proof that TWA Flight 800 was accidentally shot down by a U.S. Navy missile. His proof turned out to be an elaborate Internet rumor. James Hall, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, chastised Salinger "for raising confusion in the minds of many people here and abroad...for causing consternation and pain to the families of the victims" and for promoting third-hand information "as some scoop of his." Talk about getting shot down...
Pierre Salinger's theory that TWA Flight 800 was destroyed accidentally by a missile test-fired from a U.S. naval vessel [NATION, Nov. 25] is not all that questionable in light of the National Transportation Safety Board's inconclusive explanations. It brings me to quote history's most famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes: "When you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." ...reported, it cannot be said for certain what caused the tragic TWA crash. At the same time, it is clear that if it was the result of "friendly fire," this would amount to an unmitigated political scandal. It would not be the first time a U.S. Navy vessel fired at and destroyed a civilian aircraft; neither would it be the first time in the U.S. that a major cover-up involving high echelons of society took place. The lack of proof at this stage, therefore, does not mean much. REGINA ASARIOTIS Southampton, England...
Salinger's newest theory isn't original, but it's catnip to conspiracy buffs. Earlier this month he went before television cameras in France to announce that he had been given a document by an unnamed French intelligence agent offering "very, very strong proof" that TWA Flight 800 had been destroyed accidentally by a missile test-fired from a U.S. naval vessel. One problem: Salinger's "secret document" had been on the Internet for weeks and had already been picked apart in the press...
Pierre Salinger, former press secretary to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, met with FBI and Secret Service agents in New York City last week to discuss his claim--picked up from the Internet--that TWA Flight 800 was accidentally shot down by a Navy missile. As it happens, this isn't the only theory about the tragedy's cause knocking around the Net. Three other potential culprits, as cited on the alt.conspiracy newsgroup...
