...Republican, not even Ken Starr, cut through the President's mortar as efficiently as David Schippers, a Democrat hired by Hyde as majority counsel. In an angry, sarcastic and merciless presentation delivered in a penetrating Chicago twang, Schippers drilled holes in Clinton's words, deeds and character, arguing that the President had lied repeatedly under oath, obstructed justice by helping Lewinsky get a job and encouraged everyone around him to do the same. "He lied to the people, he lied to his Cabinet, he lied to his top aides, and now he's lied under oath to the Congress...
...Cash's songs, while other interpretations do a decent job of simply imitating Cash's dry, soothing tones. Most of the renditions on the collection, however, are just plain random, running the gamut from the grunge rock/heavy metal chords of The Staggers' "Cry, Cry, Cry" to the zydeco twang of How's Bayou's "Johnny Yuma." The album simply jumps from one sort of sound to another with no transition, and the end result can only be called jarring. Americana also has its share of positively dreadful, not quite convincing singing, such as Remora's rendition of "Rock Island Line...
...accounts, Tommy Burks was a shoo-in for re-election to the Tennessee state senate. The five-term Democrat's law-and-order views resonated with the folks of rural Putnam County along with his distinctive country twang. Early last week, though, Burks was silenced, fatally shot in the head on his hog farm while readying his pumpkin patch for an annual visit from schoolchildren. After a few days' search and a night of questioning, police announced an arrest and a murder charge. The suspect: Byron Looper, the local tax assessor--and more important, Burks' opponent in the upcoming election...
...Imbruglia pop confection. What could Beck do to follow up his inspired, trendsetting hodgepodge? Judging from his modest Mutations, he slacked off, mellowed out and indulged himself rather than delivering another jolt of noise for the twenty-first century. The album is awfully pleasant, even affecting, with the rich twang of slideguitars, the whine of a harmonica and theoccasional exotic instrument imported to shakethings up a little. Beck is nearly as playful asever, but no song on Mutations has theremarkable freshness of Odelay. When a songmakes a musical allusion--like the sitar melody onthe desolate "Nobody's Fault...
...newcomer to Nashville, Moorer writes songs that have an airy, panoramic sound and enough lonesome twang to fill a steel-guitar convention. She also comes with an impressive calling card: her lovely acoustic ballad A Soft Place to Fall was a breakout hit from the soundtrack to last spring's The Horse Whisperer. Moorer's deft songwriting proves she can live up to the advance billing. Classic mid-tempo heartbreakers like Tell Me Baby and Set You Free are her specialty, coaxing a gorgeously plaintive edge from her voice. Moorer may not have the pipes to belt it out like...
