...country" brings to mind images of Shania Twain, kick her leopard-print-clad ass right on out. Alt-country, or Y'allternative as it is sometimes called, is definitely not the glitzy pop-twang that today's country has become. Nor does it have the excess of sound-alike, look-alike bands of alternative rock. For initiates to the alt-country scene, it's hard to define the sound. Maybe the stage footwear of the Jayhawks provides a good analogy. Vocalist Gary Louris was decked out in cowboy boots, while fellow guitarist Kraig Johnson sported Converse sneakers. Not quite country...

...presidential debate in St. Louis, Missouri, several hundred mourners massed in a nearby park in the chill air. Condolences filled talk radio. An officeholder since 1960, when he was 26, Carnahan was a beloved two-term Governor. A self-styled New Democrat, he had some of the Midwestern twang and even a bit of the look of Harry Truman, who once held the Senate seat Carnahan was seeking. His death not only cut short his career but dimmed Democratic hopes as well. Al Gore's shot at carrying this battleground state is weakened now. So are the Democrats' chances...

...last time, class. Gore will work 17-hour days, go to every battleground state, crowd and kitchen table, and preach his issues, detail by policy detail. He will stress "choices," "priorities," and the "are you better off" question, on whatever topic and in whatever degree of southern twang is appropriate to the gathering. His political sense drives him to promise a continuation; his vanity makes him promise change. And he's banking that if he explains himself long enough and well enough, voters will do their homework, vote with their heads and choose him over the red sports...
