...dust of two centuries was wiped clean, the hard wax seal was delicately chipped from the neck, and with surgical precision the ancient cork was drawn in one piece. Then a thimbleful of bright, golden liquid was poured into a small, tulip-shaped glass. A patrician sniff, a twirl of the glass, the first sip, and then the pronouncement: "Rather like a fine sherry. Tomatoes/Potatoes. In her house the walls, telephones and pianos are always white, the butler is always comic, and her escort perennially in top hat and tails, ready for a twirl. Love is the only problem she knows, and that is a somewhat half-witted affair, its contretemps based on misunderstandings that a TV-trained three-year-old could settle in seconds. After five hours of uninterrupted whoopdedoo, Bandleader Lee Evans pointedly played The Party's Over-over and over. After five reruns he switched to Hello, Dolly!, Lyndon's campaign theme. That was a mistake. Johnson jumped up for a quick twirl around the floor-and then seven more. What could Evans do? In desperation, the band plunged Deep in the Heart of Texas. The crowd clapped for more. Finally, at 3 a.m., Evans struck up Good Night Ladies, and with its dying strains Lyndon Johnson reluctantly left the floor. Next year he can expect King Frederik...
