...take on some vast, earth-shaking moral or social problem in their early efforts. Instead, Gallo tangles with a seemingly dead issue, that is, one man's struggle with personal demons-in his guilt, he believes he is partly responsible for the rise of Nazism. Although the twist in the plot is not revealed until the end of the play, it is rather easy to guess, which is not so much a flaw in the writing as an indication of the weakness inherent in the subject matter. Maggi-Meg Reed, in the female lead, is every bit Sellon's match. Reed plays the four women Littlechap uses and hurts most: Evie ("Typically English"), Anya ("Glorious Russian"), Ilsa ("Typische Deutsche"), and Cinnie ("All-American"). With a twist of her scarf, she switches her personality from loud and abrasive to cute and cuddly, and remains fascinating at every turn. Even when she stays on stage during a transition, she never drops out of character. Reed's vocal range and ability to simulate several dialects are also extremely impressive...

An unabashed wheeler-dealer, he scratches backs with a fine, silken stroke, then calls in his debts with a firm arm twist. He also repays his own lous with interest. "I gave Russell a vote he wanted," recalls a Democratic liberal, "and I've been sipping from his cup ever since." As chairman of the Senate Finance Committee since 1966, Long has left an imprint on every piece of tax legislation passed...

The guard felt prompted to indict Davis before the inmates because a child molester had attacked his daughter. The insertion of this twist in the personality of Davis provides the dramatic device so badly needed in this plot. Longshoe suddenly pulls out of his self-assumed brother's keeper role, planting a well-aimed globule of spit on Davis's face, and he joins the blacks and Hispanics in systematically tormenting Davis. Dubbed...
