Erwin rebutted the charges by saying he had only been defending the university against a bunch of SDS'ers trying to take over the campus. (There were maybe two or three SDS'ers at the creek the morning he was inciting to riot. For that matter, there aren't but about 12 active SDS'ers on the campus.)
