Matthew Thompson ’02 turns in a creditable performance as Tybalt, and the skill of Jay Chaffin ’01 shines through his directorially misinterpreted role as the Friar. Reagan Messer, as Tybalt, skillfully portrays the dark vengefulness of the character through sharp jumps and cold, forbidding demeanour. A frigid, severe expression and haughtily up-tilted nose make soloist Nadia Thompson a perfect Lady Capulet, though there is no conceivable reason why her character should be on pointe. Oddly enough, Pelzig throws in a hint of incest between Tybalt and Lady Capulet--maybe it's just the acting, but they certainly seem a little too uncomfortably close throughout the ballet...
...Juliet, Nora Dickey is winningly zany, jumping for any chance at a tragic suicide, and she relishes her lascivious double-entendres so much that we can't help but join in. Erik Amblad is surprisingly good in his brief serious scene from Othello, and plays both Tybalt and Constance's boss with doltish pride tempered by the right hint of self-mockery; his turn in drag, as Juliet's Nurse is low comedy but well done...
...double-duty casting doesn't stop here. Lord Capulet and Tybalt are both played by Kanuth. At least these two are on the same side of the feud. Kanuth is excellent as "the fiery Tybalt," but Lord Capulet comes across as perhaps just a bit too fiery in this production...
