...order to bring about a new type of politics one must do more than mouth vague generalities, one must seize the decision-making process and consciously change it. In some states that means building up--precinct by precinct--an organization in order to wrest control. Then turn around and render it useless by changing the state election laws to permit open primaries in the place of party nominating conventions...
...machine states like Illinois, New York, and New Jersey, however, CDC-type groups are ineffective. The liberals must either work within the old party structure to take it over--not build a stronger parallel structure within the party as in California--or give up and form a new party. This hasn't been very effective in the past because liberals, whether because of their suburban anti-partisan phobia or for some other reason, continually shy away from the drudgery of precinct-leaderdom. In Pennsylvania and New York significant reform groups have risen many times, but they never worked long enough...
...brand-new high-rise apartment complex appropriately named Harbour House" is absolutely untrue. We have been advised by competent engineers and architects that our buildings are constructed on a solid foundation of hundreds of pilings, and the sea wall was designed and constructed so as to withstand every type of hurricane as well as the possibility of erosion. After ten years, the man had so much discomfort on his left ring finger that he transferred the ring to his right hand. Eight years later, that finger also was irritated and inflamed, so he stopped wearing the ring. Too late. This year...
Underground Future. In Manhattan, another type of automated garage, aptly called Speed-Park, is in operation. Invented by Rumanian-born Engineer Mihai Alimanestianu and built by Otis Elevator, it is designed to make the most of parking-space profits, which range from $500 to $2,000 a year per car space, depending on location. Speed-Park uses a computer-controlled moving elevator platform to whisk a car to one of eight levels, where hydraulic machinery shovels the auto into an empty stall. Total time for the cycle: 30 seconds. The system is by no means inexpensive; a one-elevator setup...
