...comic, the storms and calamities that shake the sublunary globe are reflections of turmoil in the hearts of men. So too, when the state of nature is disordered, do they often portend the same upset in the nature of the state. It therefore seemed a distinctly Shakespearean augury when Typhoon Gading drowned Manila in torrential rains last week, sending coconut trees swaying wildly in the wind and plunging much of the city deep into darkness. For in recent weeks, tremors and uncertainties have had all of Philippine politics listing between tragedy and comedy, swept up in a whirlwind of coups...

...McMurtry's lip service to psychological conflict is lost to his outsize talent for descriptive narrative. Filmmakers should have no trouble finding visual thrills. The standard stream crossing is perked up by an attack of water moccasins; there is a choice between a dandy sandstorm and a typhoon of grasshoppers; Blue Duck is a menacing piece of work with his necklace of amputated fingers; a bear fights a bull to a draw; and a dead hero is packed in salt and carted more than a thousand ceremonious miles to his grave. ...Philippines it was a roaring typhoon; in Korea, a torrent of rain. Together, wind and water left a trail of misery last week that stunned even those Asians long inured to natural disasters. Typhoon Ike hit the southern Philippine coast with gusts of over 120 m.p.h., leaving a path of destruction that reached into the northern tip of Mindanao and pummeled the islands of Cebu, Negros and Panay. That, of course, is of paramount importance to both countries. While the Chinese dragon and the British lion have been warily circling each other, the world's third-largest financial center has responded to every shift in the bargaining like a sampan in a typhoon. As uncertainty over Hong Kong's future mounted, untold billions of dollars left the colony; foreign consulates have been flooded with visa applications from jittery locals, businessmen in particular. The value of the Hong Kong dollar fell 40% last year, as did the price of choice properties. The Hang Seng stock market index...

ALTHOUGH THE MUSICAL achievements of this album come as quite a surprise, the lyrics are as eccentric and clever as always. Anderson's surrealistic imagery- "he told her about the time there was a big typhoon on the island, and all the sharks came out of the water and they walked right into your house with their big white teeth,"--and her short, suggestive sentences--"You always know what to say. And when to go But I've got one thing. You can see in the dark"-combine to create a strange, dreamlike atmosphere. And of course, she still retains...
