...services of some 3,000 merchant ships, and in this summer of 1940, Admiral Karl Donitz's submarine fleet not only acquired access to the Atlantic at the captured French naval base in Lorient but also started a lethal new tactic known as wolf packs. Instead of one lone U-boat sniping at an Allied convoy, three or more subs would attack simultaneously from different directions. On the night of Sept. 21, for example, a wolf pack attacked a convoy of 41 ships and sank twelve; the following month, in two successive nights, wolf packs torpedoed...
...This was not yet the era of the gas chambers but rather of the truncheon, not mass murder but the gradual silencing of all opposition. "They came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist," said Pastor Martin Niemoller, a former U-boat commander who had once briefly supported the Nazis but eventually spent four years in Dachau. "Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because...
...those who spent the last few years in a U-boat contemplating the essence of tubular technology, the Risky Business plot/phallic line is simple enough: parents vacate, boy stays home, boy meets prostitute, boy and prostitute open brothel in the folk's house, boy loses girl, boy loses furniture (prostitute played by daughter of noted conservative TV talkshow host). It's yer basic bare bones plot. While Joel calls himself a businessman, he's really just the businessman's Girl Friday, and the businessman's the girl in the world's oldest profession...
DIED. Martin Niemöller, 92, German theologian, preacher and pacifist who spent seven years in Nazi concentration camps for his outspoken opposition to Adolf Hitler; in Wiesbaden, West Germany. A U-boat commander during World War I, he became a minister in the Lutheran Evangelical Church in 1924. Though an early Nazi supporter, Niemöller led the clerical opposition after Hitler came to power in 1933, crying, "Not you, Herr Hitler, but God is my Führer." Hitler responded by sending him to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1938 and later to Dachau. After...
...service decades ago. But the scale is all wrong: the plane is too big for the boat, and it looks more like an effigy stuck to the painting. In fact, Morley did paint it from a tin airplane, picked from his vast collection of models and toys. A U-boat, suspended beneath the painted sea on painted sticks, is also done from a toy. As a document of catastrophe, the scene is far from believable, but its curious power as an image comes partly from the sheer blatancy of its fiction. The fact that the plane, the liner...
