...UC??s other recent offerings have been slim pickings, at best. Last semester, one open forum was organized, but was never followed up. The UC apparently took the reasonably good turnout at the event as a sign of success and moved on. It never occurred to anyone that an ongoing series of engagements with undergraduates might be a good way to keep students involved. In particular cases, some UC members’ inactivity has become negligence; when University Hall staffers distributed copies of the curricular review’s most recent reports in dining halls last spring, fully...
Unfortunately, the new “campus-wide events” didn’t turn out so well. The UC??s Campus Life Committee (CLC), flush with cash, petered it away on poorly planned and expensive events, culminating in a $30,000 cancellation fee for last fall’s Wyclef Jean (non-)concert. After that debacle, the Council effectively un-funded the CLC, divvying up some of what was left of its $100,000 budget among House Committees (HoCos) and party funds. Then the UC lopped off the CLC and left campus-wide social programming...
...half years ago, then Undergraduate Council (UC) President Matthew W. Mahan ’05 led the campaign to “Believe in a Better Harvard” and increase the UC??s student activities fee from $35 to $75. Since the controversial hike passed, reports of botched operations, missing checks, and high-profile failures have left many disillusioned with the Council and desperate for serious reform...
...underlying question, however, is whether the UC can achieve a “Better Harvard” by simply giving funding to student groups. In 2004, the opposition to the hike compared the UC??s optimistic hope to “believing in the Tooth Fairy...
...last UC meetings of the year, two girls cried in front of the Council over the UC??s inability to sufficiently fund their group. The influence of student groups on Harvard undergraduates—and the thousands of non-students whom those groups affect—should not be underestimated. Criticizing the UC for funneling this year’s extra money to needy student groups—assuming that is, indeed, what the UC plans to do with the additional CLC cash—is not only premature, but also completely out of touch with students?...
