There is a mysterious quirk in a twenty year old will which prevents the name "Kirkland" from gracing the ultra-official roster of the Houses. But the legal insistence upon the names of George, James, and Persist Smith is one of the more fortunate accidents in the errant science of nomenclature. For today, the Kirkland House preserves intact the heritage of its days as a Freshman playground. From any point of view it is on the periphery of the House plan: its mundane quadrangle embraces an independence and unity which others have sought vainly to inspire; it has developed...
...entered Manhattan banking in 1914 as a vice president of National City bank. But after directing Red Cross activities in France during the War (after a brief interlude as an investment banker), he became head of Manhattan's old ultra-conservative Farmers Loan & Trust Co. Not until 1929 when his bank was absorbed by expansive Mr. Mitchell did he again work for National City...
Evensong (by Beverley Nichols & Edward Knoblock; Arch Selwyn & Sir Barry Jackson, producers). On the reception committee were not only such conservative and ultra-socialite names as Mr. & Mrs. Frederic William Rhinelander, Mr. & Mrs. Herbert Livingston Satterlee and Mr. & Mrs. William Fellowes Morgan, but also the most orthodox churchmen such as Bishop William T. Manning, John R. Mott, Princeton's Joseph Ross Stevenson. To be sure some of the namees were themselves surprised...
...artist, a show at the Leicester is like making a good club. Last week the Leicester Galleries gave the first British showing of the wash drawings of Curtis Arnoux Peters, the New Yorker's slick, sexy "Peter Arno." The show was reviewed by that stuffiest of papers, the ultra-conservative Morning Post which promptly compared Arno's work to the line drawings in Punch. All honors went to Artist Arno. Wrote the Post in its best pontifical manner...
