Fortuyn may have plenty of charisma, but he doesn't yet have much of a political operation. His success in Rotterdam, though, will no doubt help him add to the some 30 candidates - including doctors, lawyers and one police chief - on his Fortuyn List. The ultranationalist Vlaams Blok in neighboring Belgium, which had the strongest showing in 2000 local elections in Antwerp, has been isolated by a cordon sanitaire agreement among other parties. Whether Fortuyn should get the same treatment is already being passionately discussed in the coming months...

...betrayed by foreign criticism. After a mild censure in the League of Nations of Japan's annexation of Manchuria, the Japanese Foreign Minister, Matsuoka Yosuke, walked out of the assembly and likened Japan's fate to that of Christ on the cross - an odd comparison coming from an ultranationalist Japanese who advocated an alliance with Hitler. But the Russian citizenry is never far from his mind. "[Zhirinovsky] is above all a politician," said...

...though the blitzkrieg Milosevic launched didn't quite accomplish that, it has already remade the face of Kosovo. Some 40,000 regular Serb troops, special police, paramilitary units and ultranationalist gangs tore through Kosovo "with complete ferocity," says a NATO official. "The intensity was not anticipated." And now NATO is scrambling to revise its war plan in a race against time. "He's working very, very fast," said NATO commanding General Wesley Clark, "trying to present the world with a fait accompli...
