...Carnegie Endowment for World Peace, was accused by an ex-Communist named Whittaker Chambers first of being a Communist, then later of passing State Department documents during the 1930s to the Communist underground. Chambers, a senior editor at Time, made his initial accusations in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), where Hiss vigorously denied the charges. Despite Chambers' somewhat sordid past, the weight of evidence seemed on his side in the two perjury trials that followed; Chambers produced State Department documents allegedly typed on the Hiss' Woodstock typewriter and four memos allegedly in Hiss' handwriting. ...benefits he is reaping from the system, has no intention of ruining his secure position. That position, of course, is not as secure as Prince thinks, and he discovers the perilous consequences of the witch-hunt mentality when he, too is investigated by Hennesey and subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee. His appearance before that committee forces Prince to confront what he has tried to ignore: an obligation to stand firm in his beliefs and pay the consequences...

Under pseudonyms he wrote some 30 scripts, including The Brave One, which won "Robert Rich" an Academy Award in 1957. In 1960 Trumbo wrote Exodus under his own name, following...
...hard for those who did not actually live through those post-war years to appreciate the awfulness of that era. The main organs of villainy were the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee. And among their agents were Representatives J. Parnell Thomas and Richard M. Nixon, Senators Pat McCarran and James O. Eastland. Citizens by the carload were hauled before the committees; and, as a result, dozens of writers, performers and other professionals were blacklisted and for years could not secure work in films, theatre, radio, television and other fields...
