...Sayles lingers over both his slow ambles and his surprised starts to great effect. Kris Kristofferson, as Sheriff Wade in the many flashbacks, comes off as both The Bad and The Ugly: his character's ruthless, corrosive evil spirit has afflicted him with the all-business look of one unafraid to kill if necessary or, preferably, unnecessary. Elizabeth Pena is fine, resorting only once or twice to awkwardness to feign emotion. Despite the rare slow point (run-of-the-mill stories do come up, after all), Sayles is too honestly interested in filming his characters' story-telling and story-acting...
...wasn't paying attention to any event pushing a pig for a prize. National Endowment for the Arts chairwoman Jane Alexander headed upstairs to the Cafritzes' bedroom to watch the show in peace (she won the pool). Carolyn Bessette, Kennedy's girlfriend, who has proved that she's unafraid of PDAS (public displays of affection and anger), pulled Kennedy into another room at one point for a conference. This created more talk than did the question of how a movie with a leading man in a skirt could win so many awards...
...Galapagos archipelago. Even today, the cluster of islands, a province of Ecuador that lies some 600 miles off the South American coast, seems idyllic: the giant tortoises known as galapagos, which gave the islands their name, still amble across the scrubby landscape, sea-lion pups and Galapagos penguins gaze unafraid at scuba divers, marine iguanas crawl over volcanic rocks along the shore, and strolling tourists have to detour around blue-footed boobies (a type of seabird) busily performing courtship rituals. Puerto Ayora, the islands' largest town (pop. 8,000), comprises a tranquil collection of quaint hotels, craft shops and seafood...
Interesting and interested are the words which leap to mind when discussing Adams House resident tutor Carsey Yee. "A large part of being charismatic is being unafraid, and Carsey's good at that," says Scott F. Kocher '97. Carsey is not shy. "If you're in a room with Carsey, you know you're in a room with Carsey," follows Jonathan E. Finkelstein '96. Carsey's laugh is enough to put anyone at ease. He can invariably be spotted in the dining hall, pulling up a chair next to a student or introducing himself to someone he doesn't know...
...politely posing few problems for Clinton or his predecessor, George Bush. But control of the panel moves from the courtly, bland and ineffectual Democrat Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island to the reactionary Helms, who promises to let few Administration positions go unquestioned. Helms has always been a bomb thrower, unafraid of blowing up reputations abroad and at home. He likened Haitian leader Jean- Bertrand Aristide to Adolf Hitler. He still refers to the world's most populous country as "Red" China. He stuck up for the architects of apartheid over the black majority in South Africa and once accused Reagan...
